2010 MacDougall reproduction in African blackwood. This set is fully mounted in holly. Every part is threaded onto the wood with such precision that the holly becomes translucent when the threads are faced and finished. All threads are cut by hand using a traditional technique known as 'thread chasing', done on a wood lathe. This skill has been used to produce bagpipes of the highest quality for over 200 years. It allows the maker to get a feel for each piece of wood and adjust their technique, allowing for the clean threading seen below. The stepped-beads are a feature I enjoy making because it is impossible to replicate using automatic machinery. The right angles and radii can only be cut by hand.
